PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD ENERGY/ENVIRON.
CONSERVATION WKSHP MINUTES
Minutes: The SDPBC has an annual utility budget of $49 million. The district has earned a reputation for building energy efficient schools, and will be building the first LEED-certified K-12 school in Florida at the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center. The district uses a districtwide energy management system, high efficiency chillers, waterless urinals, LED exit lights and host of other materials and equipment that exceed minimum Building Code requirements. Each year the district recycles over 3,000 tons of paper products saving 52,000 trees a year. Maintenance & Plant Operations and the Environmental Control Office has worked with schools and student environmental clubs to plant trees, save animals and build 116 butterfly gardens. A number of our schools have protected wetlands, gopher tortoises, burrowing owls, greenhouses and bio-ponds. This presentation focuses on some our proposed next steps for even greater energy efficiency and conservation including, but not limited to: Establish policies and/or guidelines on energy efficiency, recycling and indoor air quality. Reinforce positive behavior modifications by building occupants to avoid wasting energy and other resources. Invest in additional efforts to save the district money and help schools earn income by expanding existing programs as well as working with national program such as Ecology Kids, Earth Force and others. Explore opportunities to integrate alternative energy and environmental conservation into the classroom and extracurricular activities. Joe Sanches, Chief Facilities Officer, reviewed a PowerPoint presentation regarding Energy and Environmental Conservation and highlighted the following topics: Goals for Today; Facilities Conservation Team; Background; FY2007 Budget; What are we Doing: Buildings; What are we Doing: Working with Building Occupants; Planting Trees and Shrubs; Some Possibilities: Buildings; Some Possibilities: Working with Building Occupants; Environmental Clubs; Environmental Academies; and Proposed Next Steps.
